I have many psych issues, one of which is depression. I%26#039;ve seen several counselors over the years. Some helped, some didn%26#039;t. There are different approaches that counselors can take, such as more traditional psychotherapy to cognitive-behavioral therapy to a real mish-mash approach. Many sites on mental health have overviews of the types of therapy.
Another thing is the therapist him/herself. One friend of mine saw the same therapist as I did and she had a positive experience. I didn%26#039;t. We just didn%26#039;t mesh well.
The other variable is YOU. Are you willing to do the work? The best experience I%26#039;ve had with a counselor was when I was an active part of my treatment. Therapy isn%26#039;t a cure; it%26#039;s skills.
Good luck.
