What does %26quot;died of natural causes%26quot; really mean?
I just read in the Press that Jamaican music legend Bob Marley%26#039;s mother died of natural causes, and I have alway wondered what that really meant. Seems to me that there should always be a specific reason for someone%26#039;s death. Does natural causes mean something like heart attack or multiple causes? Don%26#039;t know if this forum is the right place to ask that question, but I%26#039;ve thought that cause was sort of a cop out instead of a specific cause.

Natural causes means that something in the body failed to function as is should, causing death. This can be from contagious illness, non-contagious illnesses like cancer or diabetes, organ failure, stroke, aneurysm, and a bazillion other reasons.

Often, when a person is quite ill or old, it%26#039;s nearly impossible to figure out which of their many physical problems actually caused the death. Some people believe it%26#039;s whatever stopped the heart. Others think it%26#039;s whatever stopped respiration. Others go for brain activity.

Essentially, %26quot;natural causes%26quot; means no external cause (accident, violence, poisoning, etc.) was involved in the death.
