When Icing a knee? how often do I do this my knees are swollen from working with one year olds always up and down on then also what does icing the knee do for it

15 min on then 15 min off. alternate for one hour while the leg is elevated.it numbs the bursa surrounding the knee and it decreases swelling which allows muscles tendons neerves more free range. nurse

  • Whatever you do, do not do ice then heat which is called contrast. Heat will make the swelling worst. For the best affect ice for 15-20 min, leg elevated and then wrap the knee with an ace bandage to compress the site.when wrapping, start tight below the knee and work the wrap up the leg make it a little looser each time you go around the leg. This will push the fluids and swelling in your knee towards the heart. Depending on how much pain and how swollen do this 1 or 2 times an hour. I am an athletic trainer
