What should I do about dirt trapped in my finger? About a week ago I got a splinter in my thumb. When I took it out I noticed that there was still some grey stuff in my thumb, although relatively deep so I didn%26#039;t want to go pick at it. I washed it with rubbing alochol and used iodine on the injury.

It%26#039;s a week later now and the cut has healed, but the spot where the dirt is still kind of hurts. What should I do about this?

If I just leave it will my body naturally get rid of it? Or do I need to get it out.

Due to the type work I do I%26#039;ve had a million splinters. The body will retain glass without necessarily getting infected. But the body will not tolerate wood and it will get/stay infected. I don%26#039;t know what the accepted medical approach to this would be but here is what I%26#039;ve done (if I constantly ran to the doctor every time I had a splinter I%26#039;d have to claim bankruptcy years ago). Sit watching TV with your hand soaking in a bowl of hot water and detergent or betadine solution. After about 45 minutes the wound will open up again. Squeeze and probe with a needle soaked in alcohol until you get the foreign object out. The infection around the foreign object will provide some %26quot;lubrication%26quot; (pus) for expelling the object . It won%26#039;t be fun/feel good but when the object is expelled you will get immediate relief. Once out cram Neosporin as deep as you can into the hole. Continue with keeping it dry and new Neosporin/bandaids for 3 days +/-. If the object is very deep (a quarter inch or more) you%26#039;ll have to go to the doctor and let the doctor cut it open and remove the stuff and suture it shut. You will get other answers here screaming not to do this but I%26#039;ve done it HUNDREDS of times. The most important part is the Neosporin - it is MAGIC stuff.

  • Just shower and wash your hands regularly, with anti-bacterial soap, and it should eventually come out on it%26#039;s own. If it gets red and puffy, it might be infected, and would need to see a doctor. Otherwise it should be okay. Previous experience.
  • Just leave it alone and your body will decide what to do about it.
