Dogs are not automatically put down for one bite. But they may be put into a registry. If he does it again, then he could be put down. Aggressive dogs that bite when not provoked are not %26quot;pets,%26quot; And once dogs start biting humans, it becomes a permanent part of their behavior. Or if he does not have his rabies immunization up-to-date, then he qould be taken and quarantined to observe for signs of rabies. If there is a legitimate fear of rabies (because it%26#039;s endemic in your area), then he will be put down and examined for signs of rabies. Rabies is a terrible disease and refusing to consider it is foolish. Now, that being said. Did the dog bite your GF in play? Or was it unprovoked? If it was in play, then it%26#039;s probably a superficial nip and will respond to good washing and a topical antibiotic. If the bite was unprovoked or done in anger, then it will be a deeper wound. Thus, there will be a greater risk of infection. So check to see if it is a superficial nip, or a deep bite. Here are the things to watch for if your GF refuses to see a doctor.
Redness, pain, swelling of the hand. If the entire palm or hand swells up, then there is extensive infection of the entire hand. Surgery may be required to save the hand. RED STREAKS going up the hand and arm and fever are particularly dangerous signs of an infection that is gettting out of control. Sepsis may be developing and now the risk is not just to the hand, but to LIFE!
Addendum. That behavior suggests that there is a socialization issue. Is he purposely being kept as a guard dog? If so, then he may be a danger to other children. What a tragedy it would be if it attacked a very young child! If he%26#039;s not being kept as a guard dog, then he needs to be socialized ASAP. Your GF needs to take him to the park and to a dog obediance training program. There, it can learn to play and interact with other dogs and humans without biting. I know that many older folks get set in their ways, and can be socially isolated themselves. But if you don%26#039;t take steps now, I can foresee a lot of problems developing, down the road. First of all your grandpa needs to wash the wound out with soap and water thoroughly. I would also consider using saline solution to spray into it. Get peroxid and have him sit over the bathtub and pour it on his leg, let it sit and repeat a couple more times, then apply a triple antibiotic ointment and then apply a bandage to it. Watch for any streaks or throbbing and redness or warmth to touch when you are cleaning it. If there is you need to go ahead and clean it and apply the peroxide, ointment and bandage, check in another 8-12 hours and if there is no change for the better he needs medical treatment.
Now, as for the concern of the dog being put down, I doubt that is the problem. What the people are more concerned with is that they will get a ticket for the dog not being vaccinated and probably not liscensed by your city. You need to ask your grandpa if it is worth letting this other owner not get into trouble for paying fines and possilby getting the dog removed (more than likely not be put to sleep) or worse feeling guilty when this dog attacks a child and causes serious damage to possilby their face since the neck and face is usually the first place a dog will attack? Ask him which he will feel more guilty about, it is only a matter of time before something happens.
If you don%26#039;t talk him into it, I would consider an anonymous phone call to your local police or sherriff office stating there was a vicous dog in the neighborhood and conerns that it isn%26#039;t liscensed or vaccinated. Then the heat is off him, and he will never know who called the dog in. As for the neighbors not telling him anything about the dog, then they obviously aren%26#039;t concerned about what happens to your Grandpa, and they most likely are keeping up on the dogs vaccines. -
If the dog bit without provocation, it should be put down. Though it might not be if the owner can prove the dog is up on its shots.
Now, a couple of years ago I was bitten by a dying cat. I managed to get by with using peroxide and rubbing alcohol. But I don%26#039;t recommend that: Your grandpa really needs that bite looked at in case of an infection. -
Sorry about his bite! I don%26#039;t know where you live, but the dog will necessarily be put down for biting him. He does not need to press charges, he can even take the blame for the bite and say he was playing in a manner that provoked the dog. The WORST thing that will happen is that the dog will be quaranteened (which can be done in it%26#039;s own home) and then it will be cleared by animal control as being disease free after a period of 7 to 10 days. He should go ahead and give the info to the Dr, give the owner a heads up that he is seeking treatment but not pressing charges and will take responsibility, and then see a Dr. He needs an update on his tetanus shot at the minimum, and depending on his age and health, he may be put on a course of antibiotics just to ward off any issues. Please urge him to see the Dr- and if you need to , contact animal control and ask %26quot;what if%26quot; questions to get him to understand that the dog will not be destryed. Good luck!!

1 tell the dogs owner
2 he needs to go to the doctor
3 if he doesn%26#039;t go it%26#039;ll get infected
4 it might get put down but i bet it wont tell them not to put it down and they%26#039;ll listen because you%26#039;ll pick the punishment Happened to me when i was 5 now I%26#039;m 10
