Asthma & cpr?

Asthma %26amp; cpr? My friend had an asthma attack yesterday really bad, she was very distressed and inhaler was not helping so I had to call an ambulance. She%26#039;s ok now. My question is if she had collapsed what could I have done? I was told before cpr is useless on asthma victims?

I mean if she had collapsed and stopped breathing.

whether your person is asthmatic or not....

if they are unconscious and not breathing or not breathing %26#039;normally%26#039; so the resus guidelines now state you give CPR and resuscitation.

Think of it like this....

if you founds a guy lying in the street when you were out n about that weren%26#039;t breathing..would you look around for clues jsut in case he had asthma or would u jump straight into CPR!!!

when someone is unconscious, there muscles relax-unless they%26#039;re having a seizure and therefore the asthma attack would no longer be affecting them. CPR will work on a asthmatic just as well as any other person!!! st john ambulance for 5 yrs.

• Hi i had undergone this turmoil my self. while on a road in a unknown city i fell unconsious due to asthma and a good auto driver took me to a hospital. there they kept me in ventillator ovrernight and made me ok aftter few hours in ICU. the doctors told me later i would hv collapsed if i were late by 15 mts. so u saved ur frds life and be proud. good job done personal experience
• Definately do NOT perform cpr on someone in respiratory distress. Even though her situation was an emergency, her body was pumping blood and she was breathing. CPR is performed on people who cannot breathe for themselves and the compressions are for when their heart isn%26#039;t pumping right.
  
  You did the right thing. Worse case senario for most asthmatics, they are on a ventilator to help them breathe when their airways are that constricted. Respiratory Therapist
